Breed Study: Spinning Local Sheep Breeds of Wisconsin

  • Jefferson County Fair Park 503 North Jackson Avenue Jefferson, WI, 53549 United States (map)

This class is being offered at the Wisconsin Sheep and Wool Festival:

Spend the day with us exploring Wisconsin's woolen landscape as we study and spin different sheep breeds raised locally on Wisconsin farms. In this breed study, we will learn about the history and culture of five sheep breeds and how they have historically contributed to the production of textiles. Students will have the opportunity to spin and process fiber from the five breeds, study the wool in its raw form, and view both knitted and woven sample swatches of each of the breeds. This class is a wonderful blend of historical, visual, and tactile learning.

Breeds we will study include: Jacob, Leicester Longwool, Gotland, Scottish Blackface, and North Country Cheviot.
