Online: A Woolen Tale Book Club: Counting Sheep by Philip Walling

Welcome to our woolen book club, where our literary expeditions delve into tales of heritage sheep breeds, folklore, the history of textiles, and more!

For the month of May we will be reading Counting Sheep (A Celebration of the Pastoral Heritage of Britain) by Philip Walling.

From the back cover:

“Sheep are the golden thread that run through the history of the British countryside- and our fortunes were once founded upon them. They have helped define our culture, wealth and topography, accent and idiom, architecture, roads and waterways.

With his eye for the idiosyncratic, Philip Walling meets some of the sixty native breeds that thrive in this country, weaving from them a story of wool and money and history, of merchants and farmers and shepherds, and above all, of the soil. He tells us about each breed, learns about their past and confronts the present realities of sheep farming, re-discovering along the way the fields of Britain, where he finds a life running parallel to modern existence, struggling to remain unchanged. And at it heart, there are always the sheep.”

The bookclub will be held online via Zoom, a link will be emailed prior to the event. Registration is free! But please RSVP by filing out the form below to receive the Zoom link.
